Thank you for your interest in joining our community garden family! Your willingness to contribute to our mission of growing healthy food and building stronger communities means the world to us and the east side families we serve together.
Since the very inception of Holy Redeemer's community garden, volunteers have been it's lifeblood. In the beginning city workers put in countless hours to help us get the garden set up. Season after season, fellow church members and people I didn't even know have shown up to help us bring fresh produce to our community, and I realize now that I haven't told them nearlyy enough how much they've meant to me. This year has been particularly challenging to me personally. Moving back to Houston in the latter part of 2024 was the right decision for my health, but it meant I had to rely on others in ways I never expected. And volunteers stepped up in the most beutiful way. There was Rico Espinosa, one of our parishioners, who brought his friend Elizabeth and others to help. Sulema, who leads various youth programs in the city brought the young people, I lovingly call the "Eco Kids," to help pull things together. The wonderful people came together to keep our garden alive when I couldn't be there the way I wanted to. And even the Tuesday Hot Meals program produced some volunteers who were helpful in keeping things going as well. I will never forget MD, Robert , and Danny for helping the garden rise while a brother was down. I'll be honest - I feel guilty about how this year has gone. I was struggling physically and eventually had to have several surgeries which put me behind on everything garden related. Just when we were starting to get some good momentum going. I found myself unable to keep up. But that's when I realized several important facts: I don't think I tell my volunteers enough how much I appreciate them. I've been guilty of thinking people can read my mind, expecting them know what I want them to do without clear communication This isn't fair to volunteers- they need specific responsibilities and clear direction. Which is something I'm working on. But here's what I want every volunteer to know: I love you with my whole heart. You really are my lifeblood. You are the reason our garden thrives and exist. Always, John H
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a tech-savvy organizer, or someone who simply wants to make a difference in your community, you’ve found the perfect starting point for your volunteer journey with us. This hub is designed to help us match your unique skills and interests with the areas where you can make the biggest impact. Our garden thrives because of volunteers like you who bring diverse skills and passions to our shared mission. Here are some key areas where we’re actively seeking support:
Experience the deeply satisfying cycle of nurturing plants from seed to harvest! While garden work can be physically demanding, there’s nothing quite like watching your efforts bloom into something beautiful and nourishing for our community. Whether you’re weeding beds under the morning sun, carefully pruning plants for optimal growth, implementing natural pest control methods, feeding our plants with compost and nutrients, or maintaining our garden spaces, every task connects you directly to the life-giving work that sustains our neighborhood families.
Help keep our garden running smoothly behind the scenes through communications, volunteer onboarding, scheduling coordination, managing necessary forms and documentation, and maintaining organizational checklists and systems. We also need help in website maintenance and creating apps that service our different divisions of volunteer teams.
Join our sustainability efforts by helping with composting operations, teaching community members about waste reduction, and maintaining our composting systems that turn kitchen scraps into garden gold. Or maybe you'd prefer to get us going with nature's best composters - earthworms.
Connect with our neighbors through event planning, social media management, community presentations, partnership development with local organizations, and helping welcome new garden families.
Nurture new life in our garden through seed starting, plant care and maintenance, transplanting seedlings, maintaining our nursery areas, and sharing gardening knowledge with other volunteers.
Take care of our volunteer family by coordinating nutrition and hydration for work days, organizing volunteer appreciation events, and ensuring our volunteers feel valued and supported.
Help us gather the tools and supplies that keep our volunteers safe and comfortable, including securing donations of t-shirts, first aid supplies, and other essential volunteer resources. Or maybe you're an educator who would best serve in the area of training and education. If you've got experience in the area of content creation, we need assistance with pre-production and post-production for our YouTube Holy Kitchen Channel and with "John's Chop Shop - Hosted by Irene Edwards" blog on our WordPress site.
The background check with Virtus, (Step 1)is to ensure safety for all volunteers and subsequent people that may be serving around us. We strive to maintain a safe space for all volunteers.
The onboarding process will help us learn about your interests, availability, and skills. An application is provided so you can help us connect you with volunteer opportunities that energize and fulfill you.(Step 2) We believe that when volunteers are matched with roles that suit their talents and passions, everyone benefits – you’ll enjoy your time more, and our garden community grows stronger. And your training and orientation (Step 3) will be done by our Volunteer Engagement Coordinator or by one of our other tenured volunteers. This is to familiarize you with your work environment, where to find appropriate forms, tools, first aid kits, sunscreen, water, and where bathrooms are available for those working at our garden site
Ready to get started? Simply click on one of the action buttons above, and after completing steps 1 and 2 of onboarding, we’ll be in touch to discuss the perfect volunteer role for you. Welcome to our garden family – we’re so grateful you’re here!
Together, we’re growing more than vegetables – we’re cultivating community, health, and hope in our neighborhood.
