Eggplant’s rich purple hue may be beautiful, but if you’ve never had it—or had it cooked poorly—it’s easy to pass it by. The same goes for collard or mustard greens. But broccoli greens? They might just surprise you.
Too often, fresh produce is rejected not because it’s unwanted, but because it’s unfamiliar. I once mentioned that some of our vegetables were going bad, and a friend said, “Then plant something poor people like.” That stuck with me. But I couldn’t accept it. Our ancestors didn’t choose unhealthy food—they were given what little they were allowed. That legacy of limited access still affects marginalized communities today, especially in health.
So I imagined something different: a cooking show rooted in the culture and kitchens of the East Side. One that speaks our language, respects our time, and wastes nothing. That’s how Holy Kitchen was born.
Holy Kitchen is a weekly food education channel featuring soulful, simple, and delicious vegetable-based recipes using produce from SVDPCG. With dishes ready in 30–45 minutes, it’s a celebration of heritage, health, and home—led by chefs, seasoned cooks, and folks who just know how to throw down in the kitchen.
Anybody who knows John Hardin knows that …….This weekly broadcast can be found on the SVDP Community Garden_SA YouTube channel, focusing on teaching others how to garden successfully at home. Or visit our Facebook page
Our community garden is a place where individuals and families can come together to grow fresh produce, learn about sustainable gardening practices, and connect with their neighbors. Upon the acquisition of additional property,we will offer individual garden plots for rent, as well as educational workshops in cooperation with agricultural extensions, nurseries and will hold community events throughout the year. Our garden is a great way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air while also doing something good for the environment.
There are many ways to get involved at St. Vincent DePaul Community Garden Community Garden. We welcome volunteers to help with garden maintenance, community events, and educational workshops.
We also offer sponsorship opportunities for businesses who want to support our mission. Businesses and private individuals are encouraged to communicate by email with our Garden CEO, Father Kevin Fausz.
